What’s good!

This month is almost over, but before that happens I got a lil something for you guys: Rasterinha. The first time I encountered Rasterinha (or Rasteirinha to be exact) was when I heard about the MC Tipock track ‘Quero Bunda’. The fact that I was in a place without internet (read the ‘Moombahton Is Dead’ writeup) made me miss out on that one and it wasn’t until Comrade and Omulu showed me MC Tipock again and MC Romantico’s “As Novinhas Tao Sencacional” track, that I realized what this actually was.

Mindblowing.

Baile Funk on Reggeton’s standard 96 BPM. I know that there were a lot of experiments that were influenced or went either all out Funk or Reggeton, but never in this way. This shit was fresh, 100% Funk and straight up all stripped down.

Baile Funk has always been a huge influence and when making Moombahton this was a crucial element in most of my tracks. Being at 108 I had to figure a way to incorporate it at that BPM. Over the past 3 years I have been making a shitload of 108 Funk rhythms, so making the step to Rasterinha on this project was a very exciting one! It felt really familiar, yet it was actual Funk instead of inspired by it.

I instantly made these tracks, but with 1 crucial difference. I wanted to make it in a way that kept that rawness of Funk. Not overpolishing it, something which I grew very tired of along the way. It made the tracks seem too “perfect” if that makes any sense. Since I use the same program as a lot of the Funkeiros out there (Acid Pro) it was really cool to explore similar production methods and experimenting with making heavier Rasterinha rhythms. Besides that I have been listening to a lot of Lo Fi and Psychedelic stuff, so you might hear that influence in the tracks too.

Inspiration for these tracks came from this lil notebook I kept back in ‘09/’10, my favorite poem and my favorite painting. That ‘09/’10 period was a very strange time indeed, but it was amazing to read about all these experiences.

Here is my take on Rasterinha. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it.

1. Munchi x Frikitona - As Ruivas

A couple of years back I uploaded a track on Youtube called ‘Putaria’, which I made on FL Studio and never could finish since I never use FL Studio. It was one of my favorite Funk tracks that I’ve made, but those strings never seemed to find it’s place. Fast forward to 2014 and it finally found it’s place in Rasterinha. It had that exact same sexual, seductive and hypnotizing feel to it as what I was making in this track.

Then Frikitona comes into the picture. When she laid down the subtle vocals in Papiamentu, it was exactly the feel that the track needed to complete it.

2. Munchi - Amargurado

You gotta get the Brugal or Barcelo out for this one. ROMO.

My cousins always used to tell me that I needed to chill the fuck out with my Bachata obsession. Indeed, it’s an understatement to say that I’m obsessive about Bachata. The stories, sentiment, arrangement, rawness, sincerity, dance - everything. I fucking love it. The essence of it all leads to 1 thing alone - bitterness.

Most of the Bachateros don’t even have a great voice, it’s their sincerity that makes it and especially in the older tracks it’s noticeable. I have a lot of favorite Bachateros, but for this one I focused on 1 in particular - Luis Segura. The big boss. That’s the dude right there and
since I can’t sing and he will be setting the atmosphere, the guitar will take the honors.

Mixing in Psychedelic and Lo Fi influences with a hint of Dub and Jose Jose. Yeah JOSE MOTHERFUCKING JOSE!

3. Munchi - Inseguranças Dela

Mixing in a Robin Thicke song with a Telenovela theme song. Weird as fuck huh? But that is exactly what the situation is over here. That theme song got remixed in Baile Funk back then and it still is one of my favorite Funk tracks. Besides that, I always wanted to sample that Robin Thicke song. It already has this Rasterinha-ish beat it really made sense to do it now. Some subtle synths and Frikitona’s sighs drenched in reverb and delay, so much feeellllsss.

4. Munchi - Pika Na Boca

When I told Omulu the name of this track he laughed really hard and said this: “It sounds too porn”. Hahaha. That being the case with most of these Baile Funk tracks, where if you actually translate it you would be surprised by the amounts of none fucks given. Sampling Mambo and Palo rhythms while getting my favorite Tamborzao on board to make it a heavier type of rhythm than usual. Some familiar samples for the Funkeiros and a Pokemon surprise at the end lol.
